How to qualify for the California Energy Smart Homes rebate
Transitioning to an all-electric home rarely happens all at once, so keeping good records from Day 1 will help make your rebate a reality when you cross the finish line. Here’s a partial list of what you'll need from Day 1:
- 💯 Go completely off gas. You'll be eligible for this rebate once you've capped off your gas meter at the street (hooray!).

- 📸 Photos! Photos! Photos! Take before-and-after photos for each and every home upgrade. Read What Photos Do You Need of My Home? to capture images that make a home inspector proud.
- 📑 Product Documentation: Ensure you retrieve the specification sheets for all new appliances you install. For heat pump heating and air conditioning systems and heat pump water heaters, ensure you retrieve the AHRI certificates for each heat pump installed.
- 📋 Final permits: Ensure you have final permits for each completed project.
- 🧾 Contractor invoices: Save all invoices from your contractors.
- ⚡️ Utility Bills: Ensure you have your past 12 months of utility bills from the time you submit your application.
- ⏳ Submit a timely application: as early as possible in the year that you expect to complete your home electrification (defined by the closure date of the last permit).
