What should I expect after I sign a solar / battery purchase contract?

Solar and battery projects take more time than most home upgrades — here's what to expect along the way.

Installing solar panels and a home battery requires detailed coordination with your local permitting department and your utility, which means more steps, more waiting, and occasionally some surprises compared to other home upgrades. Here's what to expect:

📝 Design and Permitting - Weeks 4-6

  1. After signing your agreement, your solar contractor will schedule an initial site survey to assess your roof, electrical panel, and other relevant conditions.

  2. After the site survey, your contractor will begin designing your system and submitting it to your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for a permit.

  3. The contractor will also file an interconnection application with your utility (such as PG&E, SCE, or SDG&E).

  4. These processes take time — permitting timelines and utility review periods vary widely, and either can extend your overall timeline.

🔩 Equipment - Weeks 6-8

  1. Your contractor will work to source the panels, inverter, and battery specified in your design.

  2. Occasionally, supply constraints require minor equipment substitutions. If this happens, you will be notified before any changes are made.

🏡 Installation and ✅ Inspection - Weeks 12-16+

  1. Once permits are in hand and equipment is ready, your contractor will schedule installation (3-5 days depending on complexity)

    1. A typical installation starts with the roof work two to four days depending on complexity.

  2. Afterward, a local inspector must sign off on the work before the next step.

☀️ Permission to Operate (PTO)

  1. This is the final step.

  2. After passing inspection, your contractor submits documentation to the utility requesting official authorization to turn on your system.

  3. PTO can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks. WARNING! Do not turn on your solar system before receiving PTO from your utility.

💡 You're producing your own clean, resilient energy!

  1. Once PTO is granted, your system is activated, and you can begin monitoring your solar production and battery usage.

  2. Sit back and relax knowing you're saving the planet and saving some money!
