Peninsula Clean Energy offers a rebate for homeowners replacing their electric resistance water heaters with heat pump water heaters. You can save $500 when upgrading to a new heat pump water heater if you previously had an electric one. If you have two water heaters to upgrade, you can save up to $1,000, with one rebate per water heater.
This rebate only applies to replacing existing electric resistance appliances.

- Rebate application must be submitted within 90 days of the upgrade's installation date.
- Rebates are up to 100% of each upgrade's installed cost (equipment + labor) or maximum rebate amount, whichever is less.
- Rebates are available to eligible upgrades installed on or after November 1, 2024.
- Rebates are available to homeowners in San Mateo County or Los Banos who own the home where the upgrade is being installed.
- Rebates are available for replacing gas, propane, or oil appliances with qualified electric ones.
- Proof that the old equipment was removed or disabled (like a capped gas line or removal photo) is required.
- Rebates are limited to two per electric account for both heat pump water heater and heat pump HVAC installations.
- Additional bonus rebates may be available for electrical panel upgrades and CARE/FERA customers.
- Rebates are subject to change at Peninsula Clean Energy's discretion, with advance notice provided on their website if levels change.
